A powerful photograph, with some compromises made. Technically speaking I can tell the photographer cropped where they did because cutting off more would reduce the space around the model too much. Although, this leaves the models head not quite on the 3rds which bothers me a little. I do understand and have cropped below that before because it adds to the photo. This one I assume was cropped this way to add to the composition rather than anything else, containing the model within a box. Once I get over my "issue" with the cropping I come to the point where I consider it as a box containing the model which I will get to latter.
If this were a film photo it would be considered perfect. My knowledge of black and white comes from my days of 35mm B&W on a Minolta. Perfect contrast, absolutely perfect. He maintained good highlights while having perfect, deep blacks. A lot of photographers these days are either forgetting to maintain their perfect blacks, or while adding more contrast blow out the highlights too much.
This may not be the most original concept: the man smoking, I myself critiqued another man smoking just a few days ago, however I will rate this one highly because it can pass along a lot to think about. The model himself seems to have a power, a strength. The frame being close to a square seems to be the one thing containing him. His whole essence breathes: "I'm a bad ass". His attire seems to only add a class to his power. The message is powerful, and subtle all at the same time.
